The young Tzar Peter had a vision of a New Russia.
One of his dreams was for a Powerful Russian Navy. After travelling
extensively around Europe, he spent time in Britain and Holland learning
shipbuilding skills and techniques. In 1703, back in Russia, he commissioned
his first Navy Ship, The
Frigate Shtandart.
Acquiring control of the seas, the New Flagship Shtandart proudly flew
the Flag of New Russia.
In
1994, a young Russian shipbuilder, Vladimir Martous, began his dream
- to
recreate the Shtandart.
A Team was formed, Shipyard organised, and many individuals and businesses
brought together by his enthusiasm and willpower. Despite there only
being an engraving of the original ship, plans commenced.
She was built as near as possible with methods and materials used to
build the original ship. 250 hand-felled trees, 8000 handmade nails
and almost 5 years of hard work went into her construction.
In May 1998 Shtandart received a naming ceremony in the presence of
HRH the Duke of York and the Governor of St.Petersburg where she was
granted the honour to bear the historic name Shtandart and to fly the
Royal Flag of the Russian Empire.
In Shtandart Project, the dream of Peter the
Great for a better Russia, sails forward...
